FinWave was supposed to be a ten-week engagement. It became eighteen. This is the story of why; and why, in hindsight, that was the right outcome.
The brief was deceptively simple: build a cross-border business payments platform for SMEs in East Africa. Stripe-style onboarding, tRPC backend, PostgreSQL, Next.js on the front. A team that had built similar things before should be able to ship it in ten weeks.
Four weeks in, a user test with a small logistics company in Nairobi reframed the entire product. What we thought was a payments problem turned out to be a reconciliation problem. The fix wasn't faster transfers, it was clearer ledgers.
We ended up cutting two roadmap features we'd sold in the original proposal. Replaced them with a reconciliation dashboard we hadn't even considered. The result was a product that moved $4.2M in its first quarter.
After reviewing thousands of PRs, I've noticed the best ones share a handful of characteristics. None of them are about code.
